Kalk 1, 2, 3 - Kalk Reactors

Next generation design with integrated the low profile twist lock flanges and enlarged main chamber.

A Kalk reactor is a great way to keep Calcium levels up in your reef tank. Depending on your bio load and water usage, you will need to open the unit and add more Kalk every few weeks to every few months. A good source of Kalk powder is 'Ms. Wages Pickling Lime' from the grocery store. Reef tanks with large populations of SPS or clams may want to run both a calcium reactor and a kalk reactor to maintain the calcium level or to run the calcium reactor during the day and then switch to the kalk reactor at night when the lights are out and PH is usually dropping. Kalk will help maintain your PH and help eliminate the PH swings that occur when photosynthesis stops.

The Kalk reactor takes fresh water and mixes it up with Calcium Hydroxide to make a saturated solution. This solution is then dripped in to your tank as your sole source of make-up water. The calcium in this solution is critical for the strong growth of stony corals, clams, and other critters that use the calcium for building shells and skeletons.

Units come complete with the Magnetic stirrer, 1/4" speed-fit connections, and the twist-lock cap. Each unit uses a low-profile UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) pad at the bottom of the chamber, that should never need replacing, although replacement pads are available.

Setup tips:

    * Use RO/DI water with reef systems if possible.
    * Plumb the unit between the water source and the sump so that all make-up water flows though the unit.
    * Do not restrict the output in any way. Do NOT attach directly to a mechanical float valve, as this will backpressure the unit and cause leaks over time.
    * Use a dosing pump, or solenoid and sensor to control the water level in your sump, or use a gravity feed from a storage tank higher than the unit.
    * Install a lamp timer on the stirrer so that it runs 2-4 times a day, for 1-5 minutes each time.
    * Do not run the stirrer 24 hours a day, use a timer. During normal use, the stirrer system and wear pad should last for many years.

Filling up: Twist the cap 1/4 turn and remove. Spoon in more Kalk powder with a Tablespoon. Twist-lock the cap back on and you are done! No messing with the plumbing lines just to refill.

What if I can't find calcium hydroxide locally?

There are many places that will sell you calcium hydroxide. Look for "food-grade" on the label. One of the easiest to get is Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime, which is "food grade calcium hydroxide with no additives or preservatives". If you can't find it locally click here for a link to an online source.
Our Kalk Reactor is Unique!
No pumps, no mechanical stirrer. This is the wave of the future. Our Kalk Reactors include a Hanna lab-quality magnetic stirrer which levitates and rotates a magnetic stirbar inside your sealed Kalk Reactor. Highly reliable - nothing to clog or break down from exposure to the high PH kalkwasser.

Here's why we don't use a pump to mix the kalkwasser

Why Pumps Are Bad For Mixing Kalk

We use the most high tech mixing technique in the industry for our Kalk Reactors for good reason. Reliability is critical in all our designs and water pumps just aren't a reliable way to mix up kalkwasser. As soon as the pump starts up and suspends the calcium hydroxide in the reactor water the water pump will start down the path to failure. Mixing calcium hydroxide is not a recommended use for water pumps and this use will not be covered under warranty by the pump manufacturer when the pumps does fail. Some vendors put cheap pumps on their Kalk Reactors (or Nielsen Reactors as they are sometimes called) with the perspective that they will fail soon but if the pump is cheap enough you can just get another one. We don't buy into that strategy because we don't want the products we build to fail unexpectedly and put your reef tank at risk. Unlike the other Kalk Reactor vendors who's mixing pumps are not covered under warranty by their manufacturer, we use a lab-grade magnetic stirrer that is supported under warranty by the manufacturer (Hanna Instruments) and that should not fail if used properly (i.e. no more than 50% duty cycle - which is at least 10x more than you should ever need). We have never had a customer have a problem with the magnetic stirrer for any Kalk Reactor we've sold and we understand the same is true for the previous product line that Barr Aquatic Systems used to sell before Austin Oceans took over the business. Not a single failure. Compare this to the experience of one customer on the Premium Aquatics site about a competing product:

Customer Feedback on the Premium Aquatics Site about the GEO Kalkwasser Reactor (excerpt)
3 Well made, but needs design change        06/23/2006 - by Kirk_M from Mandeville, LA US
"...... MaxiJet pump burns out easily -- have replaced mine twice so far, after only owning it for 2 months now. They clog easily and need constant maintenance, and, even with that, the impeller jams, and the pump goes kaput."

The GEO folks make decent products but we don't understand why they continue to use a lower quality water pump to mix the kalkwasser. Perhaps they are investigating using a magnetic stirrer in their next version of the product. Until then, we hope you will understand why we refuse to use unreliable water pumps - or worse, mechanical stir bars - for mixing kalk. Plus all your friends will be very impressed when they see your Austin Oceans magnetic stirrer Kalk Reactor start up. The stir bar is hidden under the calcium hydroxide and the magnetic stirrer does not make any noise so the calcium hydroxide will just start billowing up like it's possessed. It's a very impressive sight! Practice your favorite Harry Potter spell and say it just before your timer turns on the magnetic stirrer. We'll post a video sometime soon so you can see how the magnetic stirrer mixes the kalk in it's unique way.
